Peter Moreira

Chief Moreira is the ninth member to be sworn in as Chief for the DRPS and the current Chief of Police.
Chief Moreira brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role. He completed an impressive 32-year tenure at the Toronto Police Service, where he achieved the rank of Staff Superintendent overseeing Community Safety Command – East Field Command, Chief Moreira's background in law enforcement is extensive and distinguished.
His journey in policing began as a Police Cadet in 1991, followed by his attendance at the Ontario Police College in 1993. Overseeing nearly 1.8 million residents at the Staff Superintendent level, Chief Moreira demonstrated his ability to lead and manage large and diverse communities.
In addition to his executive training, Chief Moreira holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in Policing from Wilfred Laurier University, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
His visionary leadership is evident in his early initiatives, particularly his commitment to reinvigorating community trust and strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders. His forward-thinking approach is exemplified by the launch of the organizational review, aptly named DRPS: Forward. Together. This initiative aims to modernize the service and refocus it towards community-based policing, aligning with Chief Moreira's dedication to a safer and more connected community.
Chief Moreira's deep roots in the Region of Durham further underscore his commitment to the community he serves. As a lifelong resident, he takes great pride in being able to contribute to the betterment of his hometown. He shares this journey with his wife Janet and their family. He has a passion for soccer and has dedicated more than 15 years of coaching, further exemplifying his dedication to community service.

Chief Moreira is the first police officer of Portuguese descent to hold the rank Chief in Canada.
